lg-gpad-gpe-unboxing-6
LG G Pad 8.3 feels a little bigger than the usual small tablets because of its relatively bigger screen size. LG G Pad 8.3 follows the design language of LG G2. The side bezels are thin for a tablet and the relatively big top and back bezel are essential for holding the tablet comfortably.
lg-gpad-gpe-unboxing-2
The back of the device is made of metal which not only gives the device a premium look, but also makes it feel solid and durable. There are two speaker grills on the back for stereo output. The metal part of the phone occupies most of the back, but there is also some plastic around the metal going through the sides of the tablet. The plastic does not feel cheap and nicely complements the metal. On the back, there is a 5MP camera on the top and on the front, we have a front facing camera for video calls.
lg-gpad-gpe-unboxing-1
On the right side of the tablet, there is the volume rocker and power lock button. At the bottom, we have the microUSB port and microphone. The left side is barren while the top houses the 3.5mm audio jack, IR blaster and a microSD card slot.

Samsung reportedly sold 40 million tablets in 2013

Samsung has sold 40 million Galaxy tablets in 2013, according to a recent report from a Korean publication, Financial News. Back in November at the Analyst Day 2013, Samsung announced that it aims to sell 40 million tablets and over 100 million Galaxy S and note devices in 2013. Now it aims to sell 100 million tablet in 2014, according to this report.
The Samsung has shipped over 12 million Galaxy Tablets during Q4 2013, and the sales were boosted by the Galaxy Note 10.1 (2014 Edition) launch in the last quarter.  Samsung shipped 9.1 million tablets in Q1 2013, 8.4 million in Q2 , and 10.5 million in Q3, which bring the total to 40 million. Earlier this year Samsung released the Galaxy Tab 3 series in both 7-inch and 8-inch variants, which could have contributed to boost up the Q4 sales. Since the year has not ended, Samsung might reveal the sales figures official in January.
According to earlier rumors Samsung plans to release the Galaxy Tab Pro 8.4 (SM-T320), Galaxy Tab Pro 10.1 (SM-T520/T525) and the Galaxy Note Pro 12.2 (SM-P900/P905). It is also rumored to launch the Galaxy Tab 3 Lite, which would be the cheapest tablet in the Galaxy series. With these tablets slated for 2014 launch, Samsung might achieve the 100 million sales mark in 2014.

Aircel appoints ZTE for 4G network deployment starting from Tamil Nadu and Chennai

Aircel logo
Aircel has appointed China’s ZTE Corporation to supply and deploy its 4G network in India. ZTE had already partnered with Aitel to deploy 4G network in Kolkata and Chandigarh. We already reported that Aircel would start 4G LTE trial starting from Chennai by the end of 2013. Now Aircel has announced that LTE deployment will be initiated in Chennai, Rest of Tamil Nadu (RoTN) and few other business critical circles.
Regarding the new partnership, Xu Dejun, Chief Executive Officer of ZTE India, said
We are happy to partner with Aircel to roll out their 4G LTE network in India. We are fully committed to plan, design, supply and deploy state-of-the-art LTE ecosystem which will help Aircel offer unprecedented experience to their customers. In the initial phase of our rollout, we aim to offer our customers some of the highest data speeds in the country — in excess of 65 Mbps.
Anupam Vasudev, CMO, Aircel, said
We believe that data is the growth engine of the future and a cutting-edge technology such as 4G LTE has the ability to empower consumers like never before. The huge demand for Internet-enabled devices such as smartphones and tablets among the largely young population, along with increase in consumption of data on Internet and rising demand for content are some of the factors fuelling the exponential growth in data.
Aircel has 20 MHz spectrum on 2300 MHz in 8 circles including Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu (including Chennai), West Bengal, Bihar, Odisha, Assam, North-East and Jammu & Kashmir. Aircel did not announce when it plans to begin their 4G LTE roll out. Samsung Galaxy Star Pro Review

This uses the same single-core Spreadtrum chip and runs on the same version of the Jelly Bean OS similar to the Star. Is the Star Pro a decent upgrade to the Galaxy Star? Should you go for it? Video Review
Hardware and Design
Samsung Galaxy Star Pro-11
The 4.0-inch WVGA screen at 480×800 pixels with a pixel density of 233 PPI, is decent for the price. The viewing angles are just average and the sunlight legibility could be better. Since the phone uses a capacitive touch screen, the display is sensitive and the touch response is good. Since the display is glossy, it is prone to fingerprints. Samsung has changed the egg-shaped design from the Galaxy Star to a better design. Even though the Star Pro has curves sides, this looks more like other mid-range Galaxy smartphones.
Samsung Galaxy Star Pro-4
Above the display, you have an earpiece with chrome finish. You can see the Samsung and Duos branding below the earpiece. Lack of a front-facing camera is acceptable considering the price tag, but Samsung did not include an ambient light sensor or a proximity sensor in the phone. When you make a call, the screen doesn’t turn OFF to save the battery, but actually locks itself. Due to the lack of ambient light sensor you have adjust the brightness of the screen manually in brightly lit conditions to view the display content properly.
Samsung Galaxy Star Pro-10
You have Samsung’s signature hardware home button below the display with a chrome finish around it. On either sides, you have the menu and back buttons. These are not backlit and doesn’t offer haptic feedback when pressed. These touch buttons make Samsung’s signature water drop tone when pressed. This could be turned OFF from the sound settings.
Samsung Galaxy Star Pro-8

Performance and Benchmarks
Samsung Galaxy Star Pro Benchmarks
It has a 1 GHz single-core Spreadtrum SC6820 processor based on ARM Cortex A5 CPU and has Mali 400 GPU. So you can’t expect much from the phone. The performance is just average, mainly due to slow single-core processor and just 512MB of RAM. If you have few apps installed that runs in the background, it’s not a problem. Games are decent with good graphics, due to the Mali-400MP GPU. There are occasional lags and frame drops in some high-end games, but small games like Subway Surfers and Temple Run 2 ran smoothly. Check out some synthetic benchmark tests below.
Quadrant Benchmark
Samsung Galaxy Star Pro Quadrant
The phone manages to score 2119 points in the Quadrant Benchmark.
AnTuTu Benchmark 3.3
Samsung Galaxy Star Pro AnTuTu 3.3

Vellamo 2.0 HTML5
Samsung Galaxy Star Pro Vellamo 2 HTML5

Battery
Samsung Galaxy Star Pro-13
The 1500 mAh battery lasts for a day with both the SIM cards enabled, with few hours of audio playback, few image captures and some gaming. Even though this has a larger screen, maintaining the screen brightness at 50% helps to improve the battery life. The phone doesn’t have any power saving mode like the Grand Quattro or the Grand Duos to improve the battery life.
Conclusion
At a price tag of Rs. 6730, the Galaxy Star Pro is a decent upgrade to the Galaxy Star, but the performance is not impressive considering other smartphones in the similar price range. You can spend a bit more and opt for Samsung Galaxy Trend that has 3G support. You get a comfortable after sales experience with Samsung, which makes people opt for these Samsung smartphones, but hardware needs to be improved to compete with other vendors in the entry-level smartphone segment.
